Nurturing Biodiversity Through Sustainable Grazing
Our farming system provides many benefits to the natural environment. Extensively grazed hill ground provides an ideal habitat for many plant species. Grazing helps control the more invasive species of vegetation, allowing more delicate plant life to proliferate.
The blanket bog hosts an array of flora including heathers, blaeberries, cotton grass, milkwort, butterwort, lousewort, bog asphodel, grass of parnassus, orchids, wild cranberry and sundew.
In June and July the drier slopes are carpeted with wildflowers including harebell, tormentil, eyebright, dog violets, yarrow, speedwell and wild thyme. The margins of the watercourses provide an ideal habitat for knapweed, meadow sweet, marsh marigolds, crosswort, marsh woundwort, ragged robin, water mint, water forget-me not and many species of grasses and sedges.
