From Glendinning’s Flocks to the British Wool Market
Shearing is one of the biggest sheep handling events in the farming calendar, taking place between May and August. The fleeces are rolled and packed and delivered to one of the British Wool depots where each fleece is graded individually to determine the fibre density (micron) and strength. The wool then goes through a number of processes before being sold by British Wool on the world market on behalf of producers.
Wool is an entirely natural and renewable product of high carbon content. Cheviot wool is the highest quality of any commercial breed in Britain and always commands top prices at British Wool auctions. It tends to be softer and finer than other wools and is used for tweeds, upholstery, textiles and yarn, whereas Blackface wool is coarser and more suitable for carpets, insulation and tree guards with other alternative uses being developed which recognise the renewable properties of wool.
